Some brief guidance on organising instrumental
teaching in your school
- 1. Tuition will usually be given in groups of 4 pupils for 30 minutes
- 2. So that children will not miss the same lesson you should consider rotating the times for each group.
- 3. A suitable teaching space that is adequately heated, cleaned and lit, and will need to be available for the duration of the teacher’s visit. At least 2 music stands should be available, and if possible a keyboard and/or a CD player.
- 4. Instrumental teachers should be treated as part-time members of your staff. They should be made aware of your school’s policies and routines. Weekly contact should be made between the music coordinator and the instrumental teacher. They should be informed if any of their pupils have special educational needs.
- 5. Teachers must be informed in advance of school visits and training days etc. which may require them to rearrange their teaching day.
- 6. The music service will provide a termly signing-in sheet for instrumental staff. This will allow you to monitor their attendance and will need to be returned to the music service at the end of term for invoicing purposes.
- 7. The service agreement entitles you to 30 lessons per year. This will usually result in 10 per term. However there may be some variations. Make sure parents are aware of this. There will be some weeks when the pupils will attend school but will not have an instrumental lesson.
- 8. You should select pupils that you are confident will benefit from instrumental tuition and will commit to the necessary practice. Pupils selected will typically demonstrate an enthusiasm for music-making in the classroom; they may have a good singing voice; may be involved in school productions. Pupils should not be selected by high academic ability. Pupils of ALL abilities will gain from music lessons.
- 9. Inevitably some pupils will cease lessons. It is therefore advisable to establish a waiting list.
- 10. You can pass the cost of instrumental tuition to parents/carers but your Governing Body will need to consider a remission of fees policy for those experiencing financial hardship.
- 11. The school may wish to purchase more teaching hours form the Lewisham Music Service if demand is great. Hours can be extended by multiples of 30 minutes, subject to the availability of staff. Normally staff will not teach for less than two hours in a school. You should ensure that you have 4 pupils with instruments for each half-hour, before you order the teaching. If you request extra hours the service agreement will be amended and cannot be reduced until the following September. (It can be increased at any time).
Repairs of LMS instruments If your tutor recommends that an instrument needs repairing please contact Mike Edwardes on 020 8333 7130 if it is a woodwind or brass instrument. He will then arrange a time to collect and return the instrument. Mike Edwardes will then invoice LMS for the necessary repairs If you have a stringed instrument that needs repairing please contact the LMS office and we will arrange the repair of the instrument. Many repairs can often be avoided if instruments are stored in their cases, and in a secure area in school. Please check with your tutor before sending an instrument to repair, as some repairs can be done of your instrumental tutor. |
