The services we offer

School Services:

Lewisham Music Service provides instrumental tuition and curriculum support for primary, secondary and special schools in the borough. Please see our school page for further information.

After School Ensembles:

We offer an exciting range of after school ensembles/clubs that are open to any child who attends a Lewisham school or who is resident in the borough of Lewisham. These ensembles cater for children of varying abilities, levels and interest. We have a wide variety of ensembles from choirs to woodwind and brass groups to samba and steel bands.

Saturday Music Centre:

In addition to our weekday services we run a Saturday Music Centre that offers a wide range of activities including wind bands, orchestra, chamber music, choir, percussion and guitar groups, jazz and rock bands, music theory and creative musicianship.

After School Instrumental Lessons:

Throughout the week we provide instrumental lessons at our Music Centre at The Albany, Deptford. This tuition can be provided on an individual or group basis. As these sessions are so popular we have a waiting list for some instruments. If you would like to apply for these lessons see Information for Pupils and Parents for more details.

Lewisham Music Service’s values, aims and outcomes are underpinned by the strategic aims, visions and values of Lewisham Council’s Children and Young People’s Plan (CYPP).

Our values

  • Young people’s music making is at the heart of everything we do
  • We believe that music has the power to change how young people think, feel, and live their lives

Our aims

  • To work in partnership with Lewisham schools to support, develop, enrich and sustain access to music for their pupils
  • To support and enhance musical progression routes and pathways for Lewisham young people who wish to develop their musical interests further
  • To work with parents, local music providers and arts organisations, and Lewisham Council Arts, Community and Children and Young People’s Services to make a positive difference through music to the lives of young people in Lewisham
  • To develop programmes that meet local and national music learning agendas, and are sustainable, of high quality and provide good value for money
  • To foster and celebrate cultural diversity, musical creativity and excellence
  • To support the development of the skills, knowledge and experience of our workforce
  • To promote equality of access

(Outcomes) We do this by

  1. providing and promoting programmes that enhance first access to music for children in Key Stage 2 in all Lewisham schools with Key Stage 2 pupils
  2. offering music tuition from beginner to advanced levels in schools and evening classes for young people who wish to explore, extend and develop their musical skills
  3. supporting young people’s learning through providing appropriate learning resources and access to instruments, promoting breadth of learning and developing self-confidence
  4. providing opportunities for young people to rehearse, create and perform music with others, including musical opportunities for talented young musicians
  5. employing a team of qualified and experienced staff who work to professional standards
  6. building partnerships with other music providers and arts organisations both within and outside the Borough
  7. developing music learning strategies in collaboration with the Lewisham School Improvement Team in order to raise standards and achievement in Lewisham schools
  8. creating training and networking opportunities for our tutors and for teachers in schools
